German Shepherd Dog
I’m not one to talk about love, but this German Shepherd
Looked at me once and decided to stay
Didn’t ask me to change, didn’t turn away
Just laid down beside me like that was the play
From the quiet nights to the long, hard days
He learned my breathing, I learned his ways
Before I knew what the word could mean
He was already walkin’ right next to me
I’m not one to talk about love, but this German Shepherd
Moves like the dark knows my name
Black and gold don’t shine for show
They draw a line around where I go
He don’t bark first, don’t raise a sound
Just stands between me and what comes around
Everything he is when he’s holding the line
He learned it watchin’ over mine
I’m not one to talk about love, but this German Shepherd
Steps into fear like it’s part of the job
Not ’cause he’s fearless, not ’cause he’s bold
But ’cause he won’t let me stand alone
Thunder rolls, he don’t break stride
Keeps his body set right by my side
That courage ain’t born from the dark or the fight
It’s born from stayin’ with me through the night
I’m not one to talk about love, but this German Shepherd
Knows what I need before I say
Reads my mood in the sound of my step
Knows when to lead, knows when to wait
Figures the world out one move ahead
So I don’t have to think where I’m headed
Every clever thing he’s learned to d
He learned from watchin’ over you-know-who
I don’t talk about love, but this German Shepherd
Waits for me now before he stands
So I kneel down low, slip my arms beneath him
Hold him steady the way he once did my hands
His eyes still look for me in the doorway
Like they always have, like they always will
And I hope when he rests his head beside me
He knows I stayed, and I always will
